Innovation Matters

an experimental show from the classical painting format to the time-based-media at the European Patent Office | Munich

For this event, conceptional artist Leda Luss Luyken has developed a series of large-scale paintings entitled 96% Dark Matter. It is a science-based cycle that deals with our cosmic environment and the role of the human being in it.

Scientists and artists will come together in experimental sessions and collaborate to alter some of the paintings by using Luss-Luyken’s ModulArt-technique. New impressions of our cosmic environment will be created and a different view of our role in it may ensue. A transitory step from the static picture of the past to the time-based-media of the future.

Die Künstler und ihre Arbeiten standen im Vordergrund eines unterhaltsamen Programms mit einem öffentlichen Presse-gespräch, einem moderierten Künstlerdiskurs, Bild- und Objektbetrachtungen sowie einem Film über die gezeigten Exponate.

A Good Fit

It all started over a delicious trout with a glass of wine at lake Starnberg. TESLA’s chief engineer Rudi Tuisk talked about developing e-mobility. “Just as in the arts” added Leda “it’s all about motion and innovation”. A co-operation was born.

Both TESLA’s cars and Luss Luyken’s ModulArt break new ground. The former with its consequent development of e-mobility in response to the scarcity of fossil resources. The latter with paintings that can be moved within themselves and amongst themselves in response to film and the new media that have made the analog painting obsolete in the arts.

What unites the engineer and the artist is open-mindedness and a love for future developments. Both disentangle old patterns to build new structures with the elements that remain useful and affordable. “There is a vision at the beginning that transforms into experiments and finally viable products for the market’ says Leonhard von Harrach, director of TESLA Motors, Munich.

The curator of the show Embrace the Future has picked up on this process. He broke up several ModulArt paintings into its elements and re-assembled these into a new setting. A daring, a courageous and innovative process with art that often is believed to be untouchable in the form once created by the artist. “ModulArt is source-open to its users” explains designer Roman Luyken ”and allows us to create new views, first in our imagination, then in the painting, and finally in life” (see also the section ModulArt at this website and work with it yourself).

Such change requires to take a stand. “I have understood e-mobility and I have understood ModulArt” confirms Peter Fischhaber, Director of ars24 “and that makes me more independent. I no longer need brand-names with a forgotten content to be creative and to take risks.”

Receiving proper recognition is important to both, the artist and the engineer. The latter wants his inventions to be incorporated into new product and the former needs to sell his art-work to survive and launch yet again into new pastures that help us all in the end to Embrace the Future.
